Are you game for a giggle? We often hear that laughter is the best medicine and indeed hearing or seeing someone else laughing fires up the areas of our brain related to imitation and get us ready to laugh too.

Laughter is universal amongst humans and is even seen in chimpanzees and gorillas – but how much do you really know about it? We’ll investigate why we laugh and hopefully give you plenty of chances to chuckle and chortle.

Do numbers have a taste or colours have a smell? Join us on a multi-media and multi-sensory voyage to explore the extra connections in the brain of a synesthete.

The host of our RGB (Red, Green, Blue) cocktail party is French-American food designer and artist Emilie Baltz. Based in New York and Paris, she works at the intersection of gastronomy, performance and the visual arts to stimulate the definition of taste by provoking the five senses in new and unexpected ways.

In this ‘Triptych for Enlightened Drinking’ you will discover the effects of light and colour on solids (man) and liquids (cocktails) and how they impact human psychology. Real time visuals produced by DJ Nord will bathe the laboratory with colour to complement each of the three phases of mixology.

Vocalist Phil Minton and double bassist Simon Fell will share the musical fruits of their collaboration. Drawing on their past experiences they will explore approaches to improvisation, spontaneous creativity and collaboration within groups of performers of all sizes.

For this concert they will perform together with the Edimpro ensemble of instrumentalists, composers and improvisers based in Edinburgh. With an impressive raft of genre busting collaborations they produce consistently engaging and searching new music.

We're delighted to announce that New York based Amanda McDonald Crowley is our 2014 Alt-w Design Informatics Curator-in-Residence. Amanda will curate a three month program on the topic of Art/Tech/Food from April 2014.

The program will bring together artists, biologists, environmentalists, food activists and gastronomists to deliver urban agricultural strategies, bio-generative art, and open 'sauce' thinking at LateLab and Atmosphere events.

A native of Australia, Amanda is a cultural worker, curator, and facilitator who specializes in creating new media and contemporary art events and programs that encourage cross-disciplinary practice, collaboration and exchange.

Make room, make room! Atmosphere is back, but wait a minute, it's now 2022. Earth is overpopulated, polluted and malnourished. Soylent Industries has a solution. They take plankton from the sea and make food, Soylent Green. It's far more appetising than their red or yellow varieties too.

Starring Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson, this 1973 science fiction classic was directed by Richard Fleischer. Guest augmentologists will respond with ideas about algaculture and synthetic biology. The tasty twist in the tail will undoubtedly have you gripping the furniture.

Thomson & Craighead explore how technology changes the way we perceive the world around us. The exhibition includes two new works: The First Person is an endless stream of first person statements taken from American self-help websites; Dundee Wall presents a poetic snapshot of social networking traffic from within the city.

The exhibition also includes two works from The Flat Earth Trilogy, both supported by our Alt-w Fund: A Short Film about War invites viewers to see a variety of war zones through the collective eyes of Flickr, and witnessed by military and civilian bloggers; Belief circumnavigates a globe of fragmented broadcasts about faith from YouTube.
