Atmosphere is our most popular research and event programme. First premiered at the 2010 Edinburgh International Film Festival, it re-imagines the concept of Atmospheric movie theaters from the 1920s and 30s.
Each expanded screening uses a team of guest artists and creatives to work with technology old and new, multi-sensory interactives and live elements too. Expect some smoke and mirrors, before the bells and whistles.

This finest retelling of Charles Dickens’ novella, has become a Christmas classic. Michael Caine’s lead performance as the lovable old skinflint, is ably supported by all your furry favourite Muppet characters. The Great Gonzo in particular stands out for his narration of the story as Dickens himself.
Caine said "I'm going to play this movie like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company" and it shows superbly. The rousing score was composed by Miles Goodman with songs by Paul Williams. Toast the season with a glass of mulled wine and revel in the Dickensian dress code option.

Atmosphere | Black Narcissus

As part of the BFI's Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger season, we present a touring expanded screening of the aclaimed 'Black Narcissus', the 1947 British psychological drama film written, produced, and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and starring Deborah Kerr, Sabu and David Farrar.
Based on Rumer Godden's 1939 novel of the same name, the film is set in an old Indian palace situated high in the Himalayas where a small convent of Anglican sisters are trying to establish a school and hospital. Our multi-sensory presentation will augment the unfolding narrative and the Academy Award winning cinematography of Jack Cardiff.

We're delighted to be back at Lauriston Castle after our sell-out run of Atmosphere events from 'Carry on Screaming' to 'Gosford Park'. The writer of the latter, Julian Fellows returns with his award-winning creation, the continuing historical drama of the aristocratic Crawley family and staff.
It’s 1928, and with family away in France, a film production company uses their home as the location for a silent film ‘The Gambler’, right at the dawn of the talkies. Come dressed for your close up, Hollywood or Riviera, as there's champagne to win. Ticket includes a complimentary glass.

Ridley Scott's seminal 1982 science-fiction fantasy dystopia of replicant robots gone rogue in Los Angeles is set in November 2019, the same month that both the 'Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine' exhibition at V&A Dundee and the NEoN Digital Arts Festival open.

New Media Scotland was one of the very first four Creative Informatics challenge holders, securing £20,000 to support an innovative research and development proposal that collaboratively answered our challenge, Atmosphere OS.
Our challenge was to create an open-source toolkit for pop-up multi-sensory cinematic experiences that enables film exhibitors to work creatively with intersecting data sets provided by guests, a chosen venue and the movie itself.

Director Robert Altman brought together a fine ensemble cast for this 2001 production. Written by Julian Fellows, it's a study of the British class system in the 1930s, all wrapped up in a murder mystery worthy of Agatha Christie herself.

Inspired by the Mexican Día de los Muertos holiday, 'Coco' follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy transported to the Land of the Dead. Here he needs to find his late great-great-grandfather to help him get back to his family among the living, or else he has to stay there forever.
A family-friendly, literally jaw-dropping spectacle, that rightly won Disney Pixar the Academy Awards for both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. There will be prizes for the best costumes, whichever side of the great divide inspires you, so seize your moment.
