Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey

Selected and introduced by Simon Kirby and Tommy Perman of FOUND we present a documentary about the inventor of one of the first electronic instruments, the eponymous theremin. The instrument produces its unusual sound by using the player's hands to control the signals of an electromagnetic field. FOUND will be tinkering with this technology during the screening.

Thirteen years in the making, Blood Tea And Red String by filmmaker and artist Christiane Cegavske is essentially a tale of loving that which we cannot have.

A handmade stop-motion fairytale for adults, this dialogue free tale tells of the struggle between the aristocratic white mice and the rustic Creatures Who Dwell Under The Oak over the doll of their hearts desire. A heart rending musical score composed and performed by Mark Growden accompanies this disturbing and wondrous adventure. Presented by curator Bren O’Callaghan.

Antye Greie (AGF) is an East German singer, songwriter, performer, e-poet, calligrapher and digital media artist, whose current practice explores electronic music production combined with the spoken word and sound installation.

AGF’s performance at Inspace affords a sneak preview of her work on Cryptic’s forthcoming production, Orlando. Cryptic’s staging of Virginia Woolf’s masterpiece features a soundtrack by AGF and Craig Armstrong and will premiere this September at the Traverse Theatre.

Written in 1926, just before the advent of talking pictures, The Call of Cthulhu is one of the most famous and influential tales of H.P. Lovecraft, the father of cosmic terror. Now the story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie using the filmmakers own ‘Mythoscope’ process. They have strived to create the most authentic and faithful adaptation of a Lovecraft story ever attempted.

It's the near future, and astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon. He's completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine for Earth’s new primary source of clean energy, Helium-3.

It's a solitary job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all he can send and receive. The only real-time interaction is with GERTY, the station's robotic computer. He yearns to go home, but an accident uncovers a startling truth.

Returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945, RAF pilot Peter Carter's plane has been shot and his parachute damaged. He jumps, and awakes washed up on a beach. There was a mixup in heaven. It was his time to die, but his 'Conductor' missed him in thick fog over the Channel.

By the time the 'Conductor' catches him, Peter has fallen in love with June, an American radio operator. Peter figures that heaven owes him a second chance. The powers that be agree to a trial to decide his fate.

Jacques Tati returns as the bumbling yet lovable hero Monsieur Hulot running amok in the ultramodern home of his sister, and later his brother-in-law's plastic hose factory. A delightful satire of postwar France's obsession with mechanized living, modern architecture and rampant US-style consumerism. Pitfalls and pratfalls ensue, and nothing goes to plan.
