Mutsugoto is a prototype body-drawing communication device intended for people who find themselves in long distance relationships. It allows partners to communicate through the language of touch as expressed in light on the canvas of the human body.

A custom projection system allows the two users to draw on each other's bodies whilst they lie in bed. Drawings are transmitted live between their two locations, enabling a different kind of communication that leverages the emotional quality of physical gesture.

Inspired by early 19th century mechanical bands such as the nickekodeon, Cybraphon is an interactive version of a mechanical band in a box. We're delighted to welcome it's BAFTA winning divatastic self back to the lab, with new tunes and new speaking voice courtesy of Aidan Moffat.

Consisting of a series of robotic instruments housed in a large display case, Cybraphon behaves like a real band. Image conscious and emotional, the band’s performance is affected by online community opinion as it searches the web for reviews and comments about itself 24 hours a day.

Nicky Bird's work Gay Interest Beefcake (2008) was put on display at the CCA in Glasgow for the last ten days of the Alt-w: New Directions in Scottish Digital Culture exhibition. Created to accompany her other work, Question for Seller (2006), this work was then sold in an eBay auction.

Made up of old family photographs first won on eBay, the album is comprised of three small lots all purchased from the same seller. The name of the work is taken from the statements of the seller who has speculated on the lifestyle of a distant relative seen in the photographs.

Exploring the best known case of demonic possession in Scotland, this online work offers a rich narrative landscape for the user to browse: uncovering hidden scenarios while experiencing the story. Each leaf, cross and window could open a new path into the story, let yourself get lost inside.

This Flash based work was preserved with Ruffle by the Electronic Literature Lab, an initiative of the Electronic Literature Organisation in February 2021. The ELO collects works with important literary aspects that take advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the computer.

Simon Richardson’s Broken Glass Harp (2006) is an elegant musical instrument created with great simplicity and playfulness. Sweeping the mouse across the screen recalls the mechanical fascination of the traditional music box.

The Fallen Oak (2006) is a three dimensional ‘fly past’ of the HMS Royal Oak, the first battleship to be sunk in WWII with the loss of 833 sailors in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Chris Rowland’s work is concerned with re-tasking computer games technology. His company ADUS Ltd now make sonar surveys of archeological sites bringing us these high definition images from the depths of the sea which also includes the SMS Mark Graf and the SMS Köln.

Nicky Bird's Question for Seller (2006) playfully explores family photographs and online commerce. Using the auction site eBay the artist collected vintage photographs, combined them into a book which was resold on eBay.

A new book, Gay Interest Beefcake (2008) has been made to join Question for Seller and will be sold in a ten day eBay auction closing at the end of the Alt-w: New Directions in Scottish Digital Culture exhibition at the CCA in Glasgow.

Beverley Hood's Madam I (2007) is a short animated film created for mobile phones. You can download it free of charge via Bluetooth onto your mobile device in the gallery. The work draws on a nineteenth century neurologist's archive documenting the condition of a patient, 'madame i', who had lost any awareness of her body. Having crossed an entire century this story eerily talks back to us about the gaps between perception and sensation.

Premiering at this year’s Alt-w exhibition is the biologically networked installation World Wide Wegg (2008) by Jaygo Bloom with Ian Campell and Paul Fernihough.

Hens living in a community farm in Edinburgh are networked with the CCA so that each time an egg gets laid a signal is sent to the web enabled toaster in motion providing gallery goers with hot toast for consumption. The same egg laying response generates a single random number, after six eggs are laid a lottery ticket is purchased online.

Not only that, on the breakfast table is a peck controlled iTunes soundsystem, each peck on the piezo mic' attached to the chicken feed bowl causes the 'Cock Rock Disco' playlist to skip forward a track playing perpetual flutterings of chicken inspired songs.

Blowup is an interactive installation that uses performers, or the audience, to bring itself alive. The real-time video projection manipulates movement and redistributes it on a large screen, distorting the size of body parts in accordance with how fast they are moving.
