NHS Lothian’s Art and Therapeutic Design programme awarded three Creative Research Artist Fellowships to explore the activity and research interests of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience in Edinburgh. Alex Menzies and Florence To are joint DCN Music Fellow.

This is the third of three free concerts by Menzies, also known as DJ Alex Smoke. Each concert will be an informal mix of performance and experiment, utilising some of the research gathered so far on the fellowship into the various psychological and physiological effects of sound.

Language and Cognition Fellow Gavin Inglis, Music Fellows Alex Menzies and Florence To and Design Fellow Susana Cámara Leret are all based at the Alt-w LAB for Creative Technology at the City Art Centre.

This one-to-one workshop is with musician and composer Alex Menzies. Classically trained before progressing to electronic production, he is increasingly focussed on sound for picture, regularly collaborating with artist Florence To.

This workshop explores ways in which smells encode memories. When a molecule light enough to evaporate reaches the nose, it sometimes results in the detection we call smell. Joy Milne's extraordinary sense of smell could possibly change the way Parkinson’s Disease is diagnosed, as she is able to detect the disease in body odour.

From human sweat to plant pheromones, the same molecule can be found in the composition of many everyday smells. As we establish associations to these, experiences from the medical setting might extend beyond the walls of the hospital into people’s homes and vice versa, calling for other articulations in matters of care.

The Alt-w LAB marked a new chapter for the Alt-w Fund. This pilot national media lab was a space for the production, participation and presentation of creative technology. Open to all, encouraging new ideas and applications, whilst providing space for our existing Alt-w alumni.

Our first project was with NHS Lothian's Art and Therapeutic Design programme. Together we've awarded three Creative Research Artist Fellowships to explore the activity and research interests of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience in Edinburgh. All three were based at the lab.

Susana Cámara Leret and Mike Thompson's art, design and research practice explores metabolic processes, bodies and spaces. They experiment with the meanings and values that can be derived from alternative ways of experiencing built and mediated environments.

As Thought Collider they are motivated by emergent nature cultures. Their artworks span various media, generating experiential insights that confront the norm. This exhibition, in the new Alt-w LAB for creative technology, is the first solo presentation of their work in the UK.

An exploration of architecture through the daily production of tiny models from 200gsm watercolour paper. A new building or structure designed, made, recorded and published online each day, often as an animated gif.

The models are combined into an installation that presents a city located on an imaginary archipelago. Visitors to the exhibition can also stand behind the wheel on the bridge of a ship sailing towards these islands.
