When is a smile not a smile? Things that are nearly – but not quite – like us, are somehow “uncanny”. There’s been a lot of progress recently in giving robots human-like heads and faces and humanoid bodies. But as soon they raise an eyebrow or try to crack a smile, we can tell they aren’t the real thing.
Professor Dave Perrett and Dr Sethu Vijayakumar explore what lies behind our fantastic skill at reading other people’s faces and imitating human motion. Whatever it is, it makes the roboticist’s job that much harder.

Are 'Friends' Electric? is our 2010 Digital Media Studio Project delivered in collaboration with the School of Arts, Culture & Environment. We call this time #labtime. It's when we reveal the processes and products of our research, and you can help continue the exploration.
We're in laboratory mode, just in time for the Edinburgh International Science Festival. Interactive exhibits and performances have been created utilising the technology of Inspace. At at the heart of #labtime will be The Road to RoboCup. The School of Informatics is developing a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots to play football.
