Southsiders: Portrait of a Community is a project by Peter Dibdin using both photography and audio, in print and online to celebrate and explore perceptions around the identity of the Southside community of Edinburgh.

Thirty-eight people who live, work or have a connection to the city’s Southside area have generously given their time to be photographed in locations holding a special significance for them, for this outdoor exhibition.

Paper Electronics

This workshop will bring together creatives from a range of disciplines, from design to publishing, to not just learn about the future of paper, but to engage with it and create paper electronic prototypes that can connect to the Internet.

You'll begin with a piece of paper. This paper will be a blank Internet enabled platform. Use it in any way to create new applications for paper during the workshop as we begin developing ideas for this emerging technology.

Jon Rogers | Fieldguide to Space

StarLight

As the final part of the Alt-w funded 'Fieldguide to Space' StarLight is a collaboration with Swedish lighting manufacturer Wästberg at the London Design Festival.

In 2009 NASA launched the Kepler space observatory to look at the light from far off stars and interpret their flickering and pulsing to discover habitable planets.

StarLight uses open-data to allow people to replay the light that originated from stars light-years away, giving them a sense of connectedness to those stars.

Technology isn’t just changing the way cultural objects and interventions are produced and disseminated, and it isn’t just creating new media forms for writers, musicians, artists and researchers to colonise.

Syndicate 7 explores the theme of NANO, with performances from Sandra Alland, Steve Willey and Ian Davidson, expect innovative poetics, multi-media artworks, interactive performances, lively debate and sparkling wine.

PechaKucha Global Night

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide.

It is curated in Edinburgh by Gordon Duffy, Principal of architecture practice Studio DuB. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds.

As part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK wide celebration of movie musicals, we're returning our Atmosphere screening programme to its birthplace, Inspace, for the first time in six years. Back in 2013, on the invitation of the Year of Natural Scotland, we first screened Brigadoon and it became our most fabled Atmosphere.

Shot entirely on a sound stage in Hollywood after director Vincente Minnelli found Scotland wasn't Scottish enough. Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse star in this 1954 MGM musical. Guest augmentoligists returning include Pyrus Botanicals. Anything is possible... even miracles. The mists will once again clear, to reveal the mythical village.

48 hours | City Glimpses

City Glimpses

City Glimpses is a site specific dance project which brings dance performance into the public space, and a sense of magic and poetry into the everyday. It was conceived and directed by choreographer Sophia Lycouris, and is being premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013.

Dancers recreate cinematic story fragments behind glass surfaces around the city centre. They improvisations are based not only on their own response to the architectural of each performance sites, but also informed by writings on architecture and the urbanism submitted to this project.

Future Shorts is back! This season's selection includes Sundance Animation winner Irish Folk Furniture, La Huida and Boneshaker, which stars 9-year old Oscar nominated Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).

As usual, we'll have our resident DJ spinning tunes and donation bar. We're also delighted to welcome new Edinburgh-based talent LAW, who will be performing some of her material in the lab.
